The Winterberry Garden Center Story
-
The Winterberry Gardens story started ten years ago with two brothers, Scot and Al Leavitt. At the time they ran a small landscape design and build company out of a run-down garage. To say they started with humble beginnings is a bit of an understatement. In fact, the story goes that Scot and Al at one point ate packs of raisins every meal, to save up for a new piece of equipment. But they worked hard, and slowly built their company up from nothing.
At that time, Winterberry Gardens was a sandpit notable only for the wild winterberry shrubs that grew all over it. But that changed one day when Scot and Al drove down West Street on their way to a November job site. They might have overlooked the spot entirely had it not been for the bright red berries that blanketed the field. Instead, those winterberry shrubs got the brothers thinking.
A few hundred truckloads of sand later, Scot and Al were sore, but proud, and 16 acres of cleared land was ready for business. In tribute they named the new garden center after the shrubs that first drew their notice driving along West Street. And of course, it’s remained Winterberry Gardens ever since.
Over the ensuing years, Winterberry Gardens has grown apace of the many shrubs, trees, and flowers it has passed along to our community. Now featuring wonderfully detailed display gardens, an operational outdoor kitchen, and even a pizza oven, we are proud to invite you, our valued guests, down for a visit. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff will be happy to help you design a new garden, take care of an existing one, or chat about the one you hope someday to have.
From our family to yours, with sincerest thanks,
Scot and Al Leavitt
